'Lost', also known as 'The Lost Child', was painted at the Box Hill Artists' Camp in 1886.

The site was very likely the same as that chosen for 'Gathering Mistletoe', 1886, and by Tom Roberts for his work 'A Summer Morning Tiff', also painted at this time. 'Lost' is a companion work to 'Gathering Mistletoe', and 'Found', painted in 1892.

Note in 'Lost', that the young girl, although portrayed as lost, still clutches mistletoe in her apron. The model for this work, and also 'Gathering Mistletoe' was Mary Anne or 'Dolly' as she was known, first daughter of Alexander and Annie McCubbin (Sne.), aged two years younger than Frederick McCubbin, her birth date being 6 March 1857. 'Dolly' married Walter Remington on 16 February 1889 and had two daughters, Dorothy and Alexandra. She died on 14 August 1928 at 149 Church Street, Hawthorn, aged 71.
